Winterberry Colorwork Cardigan

Crafted using traditional techniques, this cardigan features a bottom-up, seamless construction that ensures a flawless finish. Cleverly utilizing Steeks for the front opening and armholes, the design seamlessly blends functionality with fashion. Despite the array of captivating colors, you’ll only work with two at a time, simplifying the colorwork process. This thoughtful design choice ensures that your knitting experience remains enjoyable and approachable. With its longer length and oversized fit, this cardigan is a versatile addition to your winter wardrobe. The generously sized shawl collar adds an extra layer of coziness, while the belted closure offers a chic finishing touch. Skill level: Intermediate

Sizes: Finished Size 36 (40, 44, 48) (52, 56, 60)” circumference without front bands, intended with 4-6” of positive ease. Shown in size 40”.

Gauge: 24 sts x 26 rows = 4” x 4” in Color-work st st, in the round, on US 6 needles

26 sts x 28 rows = 4” x 4” in 1×1 ribbing on US 5 needles

24 sts x 26 rows = 4” x 4” in St st, in the round, on US 5 needles

Materials

Medium weight yarnYarn: Berroco Lanas, Worsted (100% Wool; 219 yd [200 m]/31/2 oz [100 g]): #9500 Snow Days (MC), 2 (2, 3, 3) (3, 3, 3) balls; #9510 Fondant (CC1), 1 (1, 2, 2) (2, 2, 2) balls; #95110 Grapefruit (CC2), 2 (2, 3, 3) (3, 3, 3) balls; #9550 Berries (CC3), 1 (1, 2, 2) (2, 2, 2) balls; #9552 Mistletoe (CC4), 2 (2, 2, 3) (3, 3, 3)  balls; #95115 Limelight (CC5), 1 (1, 2, 2) (2, 2, 2) balls, #95121 Teal (CC6), 1 (1, 1, 2) (2, 2, 2) balls; #4, Worsted Weight.

Needles: US size 6 (4.00 mm) circular needle, US size 5 (3.75 mm) circular and DPNs. Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain the correct gauge.

Notions: Tapestry needle; scissors; measuring tape; stitch markers (m).

Special Stitches

Colorwork Steek (in two colors, in the Rnd)

Rnd 1: *k1 in CC1, k1 in CC2; rep from* twice more, k1 in CC1.

Rep Row 1 for every Colorwork Row, working the Steeks in columns of colors used in the Colorwork Charts.

Colorwork Steek (in one color, in the Rnd)

Knit all Steek sts across.

Pattern Notes

Cardigan is knit bottom up, in the round, with Steeks for Front and Sleeves. After Steeks are reinforced and cut, shoulder seams joined with 3-Needle BO method. Sleeve sts picked-up at the armholes and sleeves knit top-down. Front stitches picked up and shawl collar worked in 1×1 ribbing. Belt worked flat in 1×1 ribbing, and belt loops knitted using an I-cord method.

Pattern

Bottom Hem

With MC and US 5 needle, CO 225 (251, 275, 301) (325, 351, 375) sts.

Work a 1×1 rib patt as follows:

Row 1 (RS): *K 1, p 1; Rep from* to last st, k 1.

Row 2 (WS): *P 1, k 1; Rep from* to last st, p 1.

Rep Rows 1-2 another 8 times, and Row 1 once more.

Sizes 36 (—, 44, —) (52, —, 60)” only:

Dec Row (WS): *P 23, p2tog; Rep from* to end. (216 (—, 264, —) (312, —, 360) sts on the needles.)

Sizes — (40, —, 48) (—, 56, —)” only:

Dec Row (WS): *P 23, p2tog; Rep from* to last 26 sts, (p 11, p2tog) twice. (— (240, —, 288) (—, 336, —) sts on the needles.)

Break MC.

Body

Change to larger size needles.

Work Row 1 of Colorwork Chart. At the end of the row, set-up for Front Steek as follows:

CO 7 Sts onto the RH needle for the Front Steek, using a Cable Cast On method. Place a BOR marker and join to work in the Rnd. (223 (247, 271, 295) (319, 343, 367) sts on the needles.)

Cont working the Body in the Rnd, following Colorwork Charts and knitting the Steek sts as directed in the Stitch Guide.

AT THE SAME TIME, when body measures 18 (18.5, 18.5, 19) (19, 19.5, 19.5)” from CO edge, set up for sleeve Steeks as follows:

Work in patt across first 54 (60, 66, 72) (78, 84, 90) sts for Right Front, CO 7 Steek Sts for Right Armhole, work in patt across next 108 (120, 132, 144) (156, 168, 180) sts for Back, CO 7 Steek Sts for Left Armhole, work in patt to end of the Rnd. (237 (261, 285, 309) (333, 357, 381) sts on the needles.)

Resume working in the round in patt, working Steeks as indicated in the Stitch Guide.

AT THE SAME TIME, begin V-neck shaping as follows:

V-Neck Shaping

In Colorwork Pattern:

Rnd 1 (Dec Rnd): Ssk, k in patt around to last 2 sts, k2tog, k 1. 2 sts Dec.

Rnd 2: Knit in patt.

Rep Rnd 1 & 2 another 19 (20, 21, 21) (22, 22, 23) times. (34 (39, 44, 50) (55, 61, 66) Shoulder sts at each Front.)

Work even in patt, until armholes measure 8 (8, 8.5, 9) (9.5, 10, 10.5)” from beg of Armhole Steeks.

Next Rnd: Work in patt to Right Armhole Steek sts, BO 7 sts for Right Armhole, work in patt to Left Armhole Steek sts, BO 7 sts for Left Armhole, work in patt to Front Steek sts, BO 7 sts for Front opening.

Place Front and Back sts on holder.

Cutting Front & Sleeve Steeks

Wet or steam block the garment prior to Steeking. Reinforce all Steeks along the 3rd and 5th columns of sts using preferred reinforcement method. Cut Steeks open along the 4th column of sts.

Joining Shoulder Seams

Transfer Right Front and corresponding number of Right Back Shoulder sts onto smaller size needles. With Right Sides of the garment facing, lign-up the Shoulder sts and join by using the 3-Needle Bind Off method from WS. Rep for the Left Shoulder.

Sleeves

Using larger size needles and CC2, PU and k 96 (96, 102, 108) (114, 120, 126) sts around Armhole opening, beg at underarm. Place BOR marker.

Begin working Colorwork Chart in the Rnd as follows:

Rnd 1: K 0 (0, 3, 6) (9, 0, 3) sts in background color, k 96 (96, 96, 96) (96, 120, 120) sts in Colorwork Pattern, k 0 (0, 3, 6) (9, 0, 3) sts in background color.

Work as established throughout sleeve to maintain Colorwork Pattern.

AT THE SAME TIME, when sleeve measures 1.5” from underarm, begin sleeve shaping as follows:

Dec Rnd: Ssk, k in patt around to last 2 sts, k2tog, k 1. 2 sts Dec.

Rep Dec Rnd every 4th (4th, 4th, 4th) (3rd, 3rd, 3rd) Rnd a total of 20 (20, 22, 23) (25, 27, 29) times. (56 (56, 58, 62) (64, 66, 68) sts on the needles.)

Cont to work even in patt until sleeve measures 16.5 (16.5, 16.5, 17) (17, 17, 17)” from underarm.

Cuff

With smaller size needles and MC, knit 1 round.

Work 1×1 Rib in MC for 19 Rnds. BO in patt, loosely.

Rep for 2nd sleeve.

Front Band (Right Front)

Place m at the start of the V-neck shaping. With smaller size circular needle and WS facing, beginning at center back, transfer 20 (21, 22, 22) (23, 23, 24) Back Neck sts to needle (half Back Neck sts). With WS facing, join MC. With Back Neck sts on RH needle, PU and purl 46 (46, 50, 52) (54, 58, 60) sts to m, then 60 (62, 62, 63) (63, 64, 64) sts to Right Front lower edge. (126 (129, 134, 137) (140, 145, 148) sts on the needle.)

CO 26 sts onto right needle. (152 (155, 160, 163) (166, 171, 174) sts on the needle.)

Row 1 (RS): Sl 1, [p 1, k 1] 12 times, p2tog (last band st tog with 1 picked-up st from circular needle), turn.

Row 2 (WS): Sl 1 st Pwise wyif, p 1, [k 1, p 1] 12 times.

Rep Rows 1 & 2 until you have worked all picked- up sts before the marker at the base of the front neck shaping, ending with a WS row; remove m.

Shape Shawl Collar

Row 1 (RS): Sl 1, m1r, kf&b, *k 1, p 1; Rep from * to 2 sts before next picked-up st, kf&b, p2tog (last band st tog with 1 picked-up st from circular needle), turn. 3 sts Inc.

Row 2 (WS): Sl 1 st Pwise wyif, *k 1, p 1; Rep from * across.

Row 3 (RS): Sl 1, p 1, *k 1, p 1; Rep from * to last st, p2tog (last band st tog with 1 picked-up st from circular needle), turn.

Row 4 (WS): Rep Row 2.

Row 5 (RS): Sl 1, m1r, kf&b, *k 1, p 1; Rep from * to 3 sts before next picked-up st, k 1, kf&b, p2tog (last band st tog with 1 picked-up st from edge), turn. 3 sts Inc.

Row 6 (WS): Sl 1 st Pwise wyif, *p 1, k 1; Rep from * across.

Row 7 (RS): Sl 1, *p 1, k 1; Rep from * to last st, p2tog (last band st tog with 1 picked-up st from edge), turn.

Row 8 (WS): Rep Row 6.

Rep Rows 1-8 four more times. (56 Front Band sts.)

Rep Rows 7 & 8 until all picked-up stitches have been worked, ending with Row 8.

Transfer stitches to stitch holder or waste yarn.

Front Band (Left Front)

With RS facing, beg at center back neck, transfer the rem 20 (21, 22, 22) (23, 23, 24) Back Neck sts to smaller size circular needle. Join yarn ready to work a RS row. With Back Neck sts on RH needle, PU and knit 46 (46, 50, 52) (54, 58, 60) sts to base of Left Front neck shaping, pm, PU and knit 60 (62, 62, 63) (63, 64, 64) sts to lower Left Front edge. (126 (129, 134, 137) (140, 145, 148) sts on the needle.)

CO 26 sts onto the RH needle. (152 (155, 160, 163) (166, 171, 174) sts on the needle.)

Setup Row 1 (WS): [P 1, k 1] 12 times, p 1, ssk (last band st tog with 1 picked-up st from edge), turn.

Row 1 (RS): Sl 1 st Pwise wyib, k 1, [p 1, k 1] 12 times.

Row 2 (WS): Sl 1, [k 1, p 1] 12 times, ssk (last band st tog with 1 picked-up st from edge), turn.

Rep Row 1 & 2 until you have worked all picked-up sts before the m at the base of the Front Neck shaping, ending with a WS row; remove m.

Shape Shawl Collar

Row 1 (RS): Sl 1 st Pwise wyib, kf&b, *p 1, k 1; Rep from * to last 2 sts, kf&b, m1L, k 1. 3 sts Inc.

Row 2 (WS): Sl 1, *k 1, p 1; Rep from * to 2 sts before next picked-up st, k 1, ssk (last band st tog with 1 picked-up st from edge), turn.

Row 3 (RS): Sl 1 st Pwise wyib, *p 1, k 1; Rep from * across.

Row 4 (WS): Rep Row 2.

Row 5 (RS): Sl 1 st Pwise wyib, kf&b, *k 1, p 1; Rep from * to last 3 sts, k 1, kf&b, m1L, k 1. 3 sts Inc.

Transfer Left Band sts onto a needle.

With RSs facing, join the Right and Left Band sts using 3-Needle Bind Off method.

Belt

With MC, using smaller size needle, CO 26 sts. Work in 1×1 Rib as follows:

Row 1: Sl 1, *p 1, k 1; Rep from* to last st, p 1.

Repeat Row 1 until belt measures 60 (62, 64, 66) (68, 70, 72)”.

BO in Rib patt.

Belt Loops (make 2)

With CC1, using smaller size needles, CO 5 sts. Knit an I-cord for 17 rows or 3.5”. BO all sts.

Repeat for 2nd belt loop.

Finishing

Wet or Steam block the garment. Weave in the ends. Sew the belt loops to the body of the garment, along the sides, approx 10 (10, 10.5, 10.5) (11, 11, 11.5)” from the bottom edge, using a mattress st. Secure the Steeks using preferred method.
