Take a walk along a rocky intertidal beach, watching the waves crash in, enjoying the breeze coming in off the water, pulling this wrap in closer on your shoulders to ward off the slight chill of the sea. Seacoast is a rectangular wrap knit on the bias, with texture and lace details blending together two variegated yarns on a stockinette base.
Skill Level: Easy
Size: 20” wide x 64” long
Gauge: 22 sts and 40 rows = 4” [10 cm] in St st after wet blocking
Gauge not critical for this project. If your gauge is smaller, your wrap will be smaller and vice versa.
Materials
Yarn: Knit Picks Hawthorne Fingering Kettle Dyed (80% Superwash Wool, 20% Nylon; 357 yards [326 meters]/100 grams): Compass (A, 1 skein), Wisp (B, 1 skein)
Needles: US size 5 (3.75 mm) straight or circular
Notions: Tapestry needle
Pattern Notes
This wrap is worked on the bias. This means that you will have a section to increase from one point, a section to increase on one side but decrease on the other, and a final section to decrease back to a point.
The pattern itself is broken up into 5 sections. These sections are outlined in the final item schematic, below.
Section 1 is the Beachy Wedge section, which is worked using Color A.
Section 2 is the Slanted Beach section and is worked in Color A.
Section 3 is the transitional Crashing Waves section, and starts in Color A, but transitions into Color B.
Section 4 is the Slanted Waves section and is worked in Color B.
Section 5 is the Waves Wedge and is worked in Color B.
This wrap is knit from the corner of Section 1 to the corner of Section 5 – following the dashed arrow in the diagram above.
You can easily size this wrap up or down by changing the needle & yarn size. Try using worsted weight on US size 8 (5.0 mm) needles for a larger, cushier wrap!
If you would like to make a longer wrap, add repeats in Sections 2 and 4.
If you would like to make a wider wrap, add repeats in Section 1, but you will always need to have a stitch count of multiples of 4 sts. For example, if you’d like a wrap that is closer to 30” wide, try increasing to 152 sts instead of 104 sts.
Sizing up, sizing down, or changing yarn weight will change yardage of yarn required.
