A neutral afghan belongs in every home this fall. This pattern is worked in strips with wonderful Aran patterns. One strip is worked in an easy cable pattern followed by a strip of berries pattern. After all strips are knitted and joined, one round of crab stitch adds the finishing touch.

Size: Finished Measurement 35″ x 35″
Gauge: 18 sts and 21 rows = 3″ in cable pattern with US size 7 (4.5mm) needles after wet blocking.

2/2/2 RPC: Sl4 on CN and hold in back, k2, sl2 purl sts to LH needle, p2, k2 from CN.
2/2/2 LPC: Sl4 on CN and hold in front, k2, sl2 purl sts to LH needle, p2, k2 from CN.
K5tog: Sl3 purlwise, k2tog, pass the slipped sts over the new st.
M1: Pick up the strand of yarn between last st worked and next st, knit into the back st.
M3: K1, p1, k1 in the next st.
Pattern Notes
For the cable panel, to stop the flaring at the edge of the panel, we cast on 16 sts and then increase to 18 sts for pattern. Before finishing the panel, we decrease back to 16 sts, then bind off. This way the edge of the afghan will stay straight.

Row 5 (Set-up Row): K2, p in front and back of the next st, k2, p2, k2, p2, k2, p in front and back of the next st, k2 – 18 sts.
Row 6 and all even numbered row: Knit the knits and purl the purls.
Row 7: K2, p2, 2/2/2 RPC, p2, k2, p2, k2.
Rows 9 and 11: K2, p2, k2, p2, k2, p2, k2, p2, k2.
Row 13: K2, p2, k2, p2, 2/2/2 LPC, p2, k2.
Rows 15 and 17: K2, p2, k2, p2, k2, p2, k2, p2, k2.
Repeat Rows 6-17 eighteen more times.
Last Row of pattern (RS): K2, p2tog, k2, p2, k2, p2, k2, p2tog, k2. (16 sts)
Last 4 Rows: Knit.
Bind off all sts loosely.

Multiple of 29 sts.
Rows 1-4: Knit.
Rows 5, 7, and 15 (RS): K3, (p5, k1, p1, k1) 3 times, k2.
Rows 6 and 16: K2, p1, (k1, p1, k5, p1) 3 times, k2.
Row 8: K2, p1, (M1, M3, M1, p1, k5tog, p1) 3 times, k2.
Rows 9, 11, and 13: K3, (p1, k1, p5, k1) 3 times, k2.

Rnd 1: Using the crochet hook and starting at one corner, sc in every other st at top and bottom edges and on the sides sc in every other row around.
Rnd 2: Reverse sc in every sc around. Fasten off.
Weave in all ends. Block the afghan to size.
