Violet Buttercup Shawl

This sideways shawl draws its inspiration from a unique violet buttercup flower. With a slender, crescent shape and tonal coloring, this gorgeous project is ideal for a spring climate.

Skill Level: Intermediate

Size: 55” x 16” (relaxed)

Gauge: 13 sts and 16 rows = 2” in St st, unblocked Gauge is not crucial but it is more important to work the three sections (increase, even and decrease) in approximate 33% increments, requiring a yarn scale, and working the shawl according to your own yarn skein’s yardage.

Materials

Yarn:

Super Fine Weight Yarn Knit Picks Stroll Tonal (75% superwash merino wool, 25% nylon; 462 yards [422 meters]/100 grams): Blue Violet (1 skein)

Needles: US size 5 (3.75 mm) straight or circular needles

Notions: 2 stitch markers, tapestry needle for weaving in ends

Abbreviations

Kfb: Increase one stitch using knit one front and back increase.

Ssk: Slip, slip, knit (slip 2 sts as if to knit, k2tog through the back loop)

Ssp: Slip, slip, purl (slip 2 sts as if to knit, p2tog through the back loop)

Pattern Notes

This shawl is worked sideways. It is increased over the first 33% of the skein, worked evenly over the next 33%, and then decreased the rest of the yarn’s weight. This construction allows the shawl to be knit using the entire skein of yarn.

The stitch counts are broken up into three sections separated by stitch markers.

The first 8-stitch section will always be 8 stitches. Updated 3/27/2024

The Increase Section will increase 1 stitch every other row, so by the end of the 8 row repeat that section will have increased 4 stitches.

The Decrease Section will decrease 1 stitch every other row, so by the end of the 8 row repeat, that section will have decreased 4 stitches. (You will work the decrease section until you have 2 stitches remaining in the decreasing section that you started with prior to increasing.)

The stitch counts of the lace section increase and then decrease. Those counts can be found at the end of each row in the written instructions, and alongside the chart, on the left, in the yellow highlighted column.

Remember, you need to repeat the sections according to your own yarn skein yardage. If you have 462 yards or more and have swatched, then by all means, follow my number of repeats. For the increase, even, decrease sections, I did 14, 13, 14 repeats.
