This is a sideways shawl that was inspired by a unique leaf stitch pattern that is reminiscent of beautiful leaves seen on succulents. The shawl is crescent shawl with a thick cable atop the lace border even pretty enough to be flower petals.
Skill Level: Intermediate
Size: 45” x 15” (Blocked and unpinned).
Size of your shawl will vary depending on your yarn yardage.
Gauge: 24 sts x 32 rows = 4” [10 cm] in Garter St.
Gauge is not crucial for this project.
It is more important to work the three sections (increase, even, and decrease) in approximate 33% increments, requiring a yarn scale, and working the shawl according to your own yarn skein’s yardage.
Materials
Yarn:
Blue Moon Fiber Arts Socks that Rock Lightweight (100% Merino; 405 yards [370 meters]/146 grams): Twilight, 1 skein
Needles: US size 6 (4 mm): straight or circular needles.
Notions: M; tapestry needle; yarn scale; cable needle (optional)
Abbreviations
RS = Right side
WS = Wrong side
CO = Cast on
BO = Bind off
Pm = place m
sm = slip m
st(s) = Stitch(es)
k = k
p = purl
kfb = increase one stitch. k in front and back of stitch.
yo = yarn over
ktbl = k through the back loop
k2tog = k two together (k 2 stitches together)
ssk = slip, slip, k (slip 2 stitches as if to k, k2tog through the back loop)
Special Stitches
K One Front and Back (KFB)
Cabling without a cable needle
C6F – Sl 3 sts to cn, hold in front, k3 sts, k3 from cn
C4B – Sl 2 sts to cn, hold in back, k2 sts, k2 from cn
BO4 (bind off 4 stitches) – K1, (k1, pass previous k st over the newly k st) 4 times.
Sk2p – Sl 1 st as if to k, k 2 sts together, pass slipped stitch over the k2tog st.
Pattern Notes
This shawl is worked sideways. It is increased over approximately the first 33% of the skein, worked even over the next approximate 33% of the skein’s total weight, and then decreased the rest of the yarn’s weight.
You will need to weigh your yarn on a yarn scale before and as you k this shawl. If you are not using a scale, you MUST swatch to get gauge and follow the repeats of the sample of 6/3/6. (Increase/Even/Decrease)
Chart
Right Side (RS) Odd numbered rows: The chart is read from right-to-left.
Wrong Side (WS) Even numbered rows: The chart is read from left-to-right.
The stitch marker is placed where the red line is on the chart.
The stitch count of the lace edge section increase and then decrease.
Pattern
Note: The sample was worked with 6/3/6 repeats. Please remember, you need to repeat the sections according to your own yarn skein yardage unless you have gotten gauge.
CO 24, using long-tail cast on.
