Bonfire Cowl

An allover, easy-to-memorize pattern is used in the Bonfire Cowl. Featuring crochet shells on the edge, this longer cowl gives the wearer a number of draping options — which makes it perfect for cozying up next to a bonfire at the beach.

Skill Level:  Intermediate

Size: Approx. 40” circumference x 8” height

Gauge: 16 sts and 24 rows = 4” [10cm] in pattern st

Gauge is not critical to this project, but may affect the amount of yarn needed.

Materials

Yarn: Plymouth Yarn Cleo (100% Mercerized Cotton; 125 yards [114 meters]/50 grams): #130 Red (A, 1 hank), #121 Apricot (B, 1 hank), #140 Yellow (C, 1 hank)

Needle: US size 8 (5mm) 30” circular

Notions: Stitch marker, US size 8/H (5.0 mm) crochet hook

Special Stitches

Fire Lace Pattern (multiple of 4 sts)

Rnds 1-2: Knit.

Rnd 3: *Yo, k1, yo, sssk; rep from * around.

Rnds 4-6: Knit.

Rnd 7: *Yo, sssk, yo, k1; rep from * around. Move marker 1 st to the left.

Rnd 8: Knit.

Rep Rnds 1-8 for patt.

Color Sequence

Work 8 Rnds with A.

Work (1 Rnd with B, 1 Rnd with A) for 4 rnds.

Work 8 rnds with B.

Work (1 Rnd with C, 1 Rnd with B) for 4 rnds.

Work 8 Rnds with C.

Pattern

Cowl

With A, CO 200 sts. Join without twisting, pm between first and last st.

Work Fire Lace Pattern even in Color Sequence for 40 rnds.

BO loosely. Do not cut yarn. Place last st on crochet hook.

Upper Edging

Rnd 1: Work 1 rnd of sc in BO edge, keeping work flat. Join with sl st.

Rnd 2: Ch 1, *sk 2 sc, work 5 dc in next sc, sk next 2 sc, sl st in next sc; rep from * around.

Join with sl st. Fasten off.

Lower Edging

Join A in first st of CO edge.

Work as for Upper Edging.

Finishing

Weave in ends. Block.
