With smaller needles, CO 40 sts, join in the rnd, being careful not to twist. PM to denote the end of the round.
Work K2, P2 ribbing for ½” [1.3 cm].
Switch to larger needles.
Next Rnd: P13, PM, work Rnd 1 of Chart over next 14 sts, PM, p13.
Cont working chart pattern, keeping all non-charted sts (the background sts) in Reverse St st, AT THE SAME TIME, increase 1 st on both sides of end of round marker on Rnds 7, 14, 21, and 28. – 48 sts. Updated 5/12/2021
Note: These increase rnds are highlighted in green on the chart. It is the knitter’s preference which increase method to use. The sample used a p1fb.
If needed, after completing chart, cont working in Reverse St st until piece meas 4½” [11.4 cm] from CO rnd.
Change to smaller needles.

Finishing
Block to measurements. Weave in yarn ends. Embellish as desired. 
I am not certain of WHERE the INCREASE st is. I know there are 2 increase sts in row 7, 14, 21, 28. I have a marker OUTSIDE the center 14 sts. Do I increase the st just before or just after the marker (depending where I am in the row)???

Hi! I am on my second attempt, though not discouraged.
Where I have a visual problem is on the increase “green” rows. I understand it is row 7, 14, 21, 28. But WHERE do I increase ?
I have a marker at either end of the 14 center stitches. Essentially the increase stitch is on either side of the markers; not increasing any of the 14 center tree sts?
When I come to row 6, I increase on the purl st JUST BEFORE the marker, then continue the charted center sts, pass marker, then increase the first st after that till the end of the row. Right??

I am confused. Is this worked only with a chart? Or is “Chart Pattern (worked over 14 stitches)” the written out instructions for those of us who don’t normally do charts? I don’t see an example of “Rnds 1-5: Knit” in the photograph. I am determined to knit this but not sure if I should even try.

This pattern is worked using either the written directions for the chart, or the chart itself, over those center 14 stitches. The written directions are located above The chart is a link under the photos on the right. The first 5 rows of the chart are knit, and they are knit in the photos, but the cables in row 6 make them appear otherwise. Hope that helps! – Nicola, Editor
