Daylight Set

Step out into the daylight of a chilly winter’s day sporting this classic set based off of the popular Midnight Set from December 2016. Featuring a ribbed hem and cables, incredible texture and a fresh color, this set is perfect for winter weather. Pair it with an oversized sweater and jeans for a classic winter look.

Sizes:

Hat: 17” / [43 cm] width, 9-10” / [23-25 cm] length to fit head circumference 21½- 23¼” / 55-59 cm

Infinity Scarf: 10” / [25.5 cm] width, circumference 53” / [135 cm]

Gauge: 24 sts x 32 rows = 4” [10 cm] over pattern with larger needles with yarn held TRIPLE

TAKE TIME TO MAKE A SWATCH AND OBTAIN THE GAUGE

Materials

Yarn: Cascade Yarns Heritage (75% Merino Superwash, 25% Nylon; 437 yards [400 meters]/ 100 grams): color 5686, 4 hanks

Needles: US size 7 (4,5 mm) and US size 10½ (6.5 mm): circular needles, length 16” [40 cm] or longer to use magic loop method; US size 10½ (6.5 mm): DPNs for hat crown; US size 10½ (6.5 mm): straight needles for cowl

Notions: 6 markers (one contrast color for beg of rnd); cable needle; tapestry needle; waste yarn; spare US size 10½ (6.5 mm) needle for 3-needle bind off;

Special stitches

SM – slip marker

RS – right side

WS – wrong side

LN – left needle

RN – right needle

CN – cable needle

st – stitch

sts – stitches

k – knit

k1tbl – knit next stitch through back loop

p – purl

M1 – make one stitch: with the RN tip, pick up the thread between st just worked and the next on LN, from front to back, put it on LN, knit this loop (through front loop, no hole should appear)

k2tog – knit two next sts together (1 st decreased)

ssk – slip, slip, knit (1 st decreased)

sl1 wyif – slip st with yarn in front of work

sl1 wyib – slip st with yarn to the back of work

C8F – slip next 4 sts on CN and hold to the front of work, k4 from LN, k4 from CN

C8B – slip next 4 sts on CN and hold to the back of work, k4 from LN, k4 from CN

C6B – slip next 3 sts on CN and hold to the back of work, k3 from LN, k3 from CN

C6F – slip next 3 sts on CN and hold to the front of work, k3 from LN, k3 from CN 

Patterns

Hat

Brim

With smaller circular needles, yarn held TRIPLE, CO 98 sts using cable cast-on, join to k in the rnd being careful not to twist the sts, place contrast marker at beg of rnd.

Rnd 1: *P1, k1; rep from * around to M, SM.

Rep last Rnd 10 times total.

Inc Rnd: *P2, k1, p2, k1, p1, (kfb, p1) 3 times, k1, PM; rep from * 6 more times, SM – 119 sts on needles.

Body

Switch to larger circular needles.

Rnd 1: *P1, k1, k1tbl, k1, p1, k12, SM; rep from * 6 more times around.

Rnd 2: *P2, k1tbl, p2, k12, SM; rep from * 6 more times around.

Rnd 3: *P1, k1, k1tbl, k1, p1, C8B, k4, SM; rep from * 6 more times around.

Rnd 4: Same as Rnd 2.

Rnd 5: Same as Rnd 1.

Rnd 6: Same as Rnd 2.

Rnd 7: *P1, k1, k1tbl, k1, p1, k4, C8F, SM; rep from * 6 more times around.

Rnd 8: Same as Rnd 2.

Rep Rnds 1-8, 5 times total, then Rnds 1-4 once more.

The beanie should measure about 8” / [20.5 cm] unblocked.

Crown

Change needles to DPNs the same size and work crown.

Rnd 1: *SM, p1, k1, k1tbl, k1, p1, (k2tog, k3) twice, k2tog; rep from * 6 more times – 98 sts.

Rnd 2: *SM, p2tog, k1tbl, p2tog, k9; rep from * 6 more times – 84 sts.

Rnd 3: *SM, k1, k1tbl, k1, k3, C6F; rep from * 6 more times.

Rnd 4: *SM, slip next st on CN and hold to the back of work, slip next st on RN, slip 1 st from CN back on to LN, slip 1 st from RN to LN, k3tog (2 sts decreased, the central ktbl is on top), k9; rep from * 6 more times – 70 sts.

Rnd 6: *SM, k1tbl, C6B, k3; rep from * 6 more times.

Rnd 7: *SM, k1tbl, (k2tog, k1) 3 times; rep from * 6 more times – 49 sts.

Rnd 8: SM, knit to end rnd, removing markers;

Rnd 9: SM, k2tog to 1 st before end of rnd, k1– 25 sts.

Rnd 10: SM, k2tog to 1 st before end of rnd, k1 – 13 sts.

Finishing

Break yarn, thread yarn tail on a tapestry needle and pull through live stitches. Weave in all ends.

Wet-block to measurements.

Cowl

With larger straight needles and waste yarn, CO 43 sts.

With main yarn held TRIPLE, purl 1 row.

Set-up Row 1 (RS): Sl1 wyib, sl1 wyif, k1, p2, k12, (p1, k3) 4 times, p1, k12, p2, k1, sl1 wyif, p1.

Set-up Row 2 (WS): Sl1 wyib, k1, sl1 wyif, k2, p12, k2, (p1, k3) 3 times, p1, k2, p12, k2, sl1 wyif, k1, p1.

Row 1 (RS): Sl1 wyib, sl1 wyif, k1, p2, work chart A, (p1, k3) 4 times, p1, work chart B, p2, k1, sl1 wyif, p1.

Row 2 (WS): Sl1 wyib, k1, sl1 wyif, k2, work chart B, k2, (p1, k3) 3 times, p1, k2, work chart A, k2, sl1 wyif, k1, p1.

Rep last 2 rows until piece measures 53” / [135 cm], ending with Row 5 of charts.

Carefully unravel waste yarn of CO row, placing live sts one by one on a spare needle. Fold the cowl wrong side up, matching first and last rows.

3-Needle BO Row (WS up and RS inside): Hold 2 tips of circular needles parallel facing right, beg binding off as folls: insert tip of RN into first st on first needle, insert tip of RN into first st on 2nd needle, knit them together, *insert tip of RN into first st on first needle, insert tip of RN into first st on 2nd needle, knit them together, pass first st over 2nd st on RN (1 st decreased); rep from * to end rnd. No sts rem.

Finishing

Break yarn, thread yarn tail on a tapestry needle and weave in all ends. Block to measurements.

Charts

The chart reads right to left on RS and left to right on WS. The chart shows only right side of fabric.
