Harbor Hoodie

Harbor Hoodie is a relaxed, open-front, hooded cardigan. It’s perfect for summer evenings at the harbor.

Skill Level: Intermediate

Size: Finished Bust Size 35 (38, 43, 46, 51, 56)” to fit bust 31 (34, 38, 42, 46, 50)”

4-6” positive ease recommended.

Shown in size 38”.

Gauge: 20 sts and 26 rows = 4” [10 cm] in Dot Stitch after wet blocking

Materials

Yarn: The Plucky Knitter Crew (75% Wool, 25 % Cotton; 300 yards [274 meters]/115 grams): Twill (MC, 5 (5, 6, 6, 7) skeins), Espadrille (CC, 1 (1, 1, 1, 2) skeins)

Needles: US size 7 (4.5 mm) circular in length to accommodate chest circumference, 16” circular, and DPNs (optional).

Notions: Waste yarn or stitch holders, tapestry needle.

Dot Stitch (worked flat over a multiple of 4 sts plus 3, plus 2 selvedge st.)

Row 1 (RS): Knit.

Row 2 and all WS rows: Purl.

Row 3: K2, *p1, k3; rep from * to last 3 sts, p1, k2.

Row 5: Knit.

Row 7: K4, *p1, k3; rep from * to last st, k1.

Row 8: Purl.

Pattern Notes

Harbor Hoodie is worked from the bottom up in one piece to the underarms. It is then divided into three pieces and worked separately to the shoulder. The sleeves are picked up from the armhole and worked in the round to the cuff. The hood is joined to live stitches held at the front and back neck.

Pattern includes a selvedge stitch at the beginning and end of each row for picking up stitches for the front band. The front bands are designed to overlap, so are not reflected in the finished chest measurement or schematic.

Body (worked flat)

With MC and longer circular needle, CO 177 (193, 213, 237, 257, 277) sts.

Work in Garter Rib until piece meas 1.5” from CO edge, ending with a WS row.

Work Rows 1-4 of Dot Stitch patt.

With CC, work 2 rows in St st.

With MC, work Rows 5-8 of Dot Stitch patt.

With CC, work 2 rows in St st.

With MC, work Rows 1-4 of Dot Stitch patt.

With CC, work 2 rows in St st.

With MC and beginning with Row 5, cont in Dot Stitch patt until piece meas 19 (19, 19, 19, 19.5, 19.5)” from CO edge, ending with a WS row.

Divide for Front and Back

Right Front

Work 44 (48, 52, 60, 64, 68) sts for Right Front. Place remaining sts on waste yarn.

Cont in Dot Stitch patt until Armhole meas 7 (7.5, 8, 8.75, 9, 10)”, ending on a RS row.

Note: The pattern will remain the same at the beg of row, but adjust at end of row to remain in pattern.

Next Row (WS): BO 12 (14, 16, 18, 20, 22) sts, purl to end.

Next Row (RS): Work in patt.

Next Row: BO 12 (14, 16, 18, 20, 22) sts, purl to end.

Place rem 20 (20, 20, 24, 24, 24) sts on holder of waste yarn.

Back

With RS facing, remove next 89 (97, 109, 117, 129, 141) sts.

Beg with RS row, cont in patt until Armhole meas same as Right Front, ending with a WS row.

Next Row (RS): BO 12 (14, 17, 18, 20, 22) sts, work to end.

Next Row (WS): BO 12 (14, 17, 18, 20, 22) sts, work to end.

Rep last 2 rows once more.

Place rem 41 (41, 41, 45, 49, 53) sts on waste yarn or holder.

Left Front

Beg with RS row, work in patt until Armhole meas same as Right Front, ending on a WS row.

Note: The pattern will rem the same at end of row. Adjust at beg of row to stay in pattern.

Next Row (RS): BO 12 (14, 14, 18, 20, 22) sts, work to end.

Next Row (WS): Purl.

Next Row: BO 12 (14, 14, 18, 20, 22) sts, work to end.

Next Row: Purl.

Place rem 20 (20, 24, 24, 24, 24) sts on holder of waste yarn.

Seam shoulders together.

Arms (worked in the rnd)

With MC, pick up 71 (75, 79, 87, 91, 99) evenly around Armhole. Place marker and join for working in the rnd.

Work 3 rows in Dot Stitch patt.

Dec Row: K2tog, work in patt to last 2 sts, ssk. (69 (73, 77, 85, 89, 97) sts)

Work Dec Row every 7 (7, 7, 6, 6, 6)th row 14 (14, 15, 18, 18, 22) more times, while cont to work patt as follows:

Note: While working decs, adjust Dot Stitch patt to stay in pattern.

Work in Dot Stitch patt until Arm meas 5.5 (5.5, 5.5, 6, 6, 6)”.

With CC, work 2 rnds St st.

With MC, work 4 rows of Dot Stitch patt as follows:

Rnds 1-2: Knit

Rnd 3: Work Dot Stitch patt.

Rnd 4: Knit.

Rep last 6 rnds until piece meas 17 (17, 17.5, 17.5, 18, 18)” from Armhole, ending with Rnd 3 of Dot Stitch patt. (41 (45, 47, 49, 53, 53) sts)

Change to DPNs if necessary.

Dec Row: With MC, k to last to 2 sts, ssk. (40, (44, 46, 48, 52, 52) sts)

With MC, work in Garter Rib for 1.5”.

Hood

Place held sts from Right Front, Back, and Left Front on needles. (81 (81, 81, 93, 97, 101) sts)

Beg with a RS row, work in Dot Stitch patt until Hood meas 11 (11, 11, 10.5, 10, 10)”, ending with a WS row.

Next Row (RS): BO 30 (30, 30, 32, 35, 35) sts, work in patt to end.

Next Row (WS): BO 30 (30, 30, 32, 35, 35) sts, work in patt to end. (21 (21, 21, 29, 27, 31) sts)

Work in patt for 6 (6, 6, 6.5, 7, 7)”.

BO.

Seam bound off edges to sides of Hood center.

Front Band

Pick up 335 (339, 347, 361, 361, 377) sts along Front of sweater as follows:

130 (132, 136, 140, 142, 148) sts from Right Front, 75 (75, 75, 81, 77, 81) sts from Hood, 130 (132, 136, 140, 142, 148) sts from Left Front.

Work in Garter Rib for 1.5”.

BO.

Finishing

Weave in ends.

Wet block to measurements.
