French Cathedral Beret

This stunning beret is reminiscent of looking in through some of the gorgeous windows at the Bourges Cathedral in France. The winding cables mimic the panes and give the hat a small amount of texture.

Skill Level: Easy

Size: One size

Gauge: 6.5 st = 1” using size 3 needles

Materials

Fine weight yarnYarn: Malabrigo Arroyo (100% superwash merino wool; 335 yards [306 meters]/100 grams): #133 Reflecting Pool (1 skein)
Needles: US size 3 (3.25 mm) circular (24”) needles for ribbing, US size 5 (3.75 mm) circular (24”) needle for main cap, US size 5 (3.75 mm) double-pointed needles for finishing (or size needed for gauge)
Notions: Cable needle

Pattern Notes

All slip stitches should be worked with yarn in back. Switch to double pointed needles once the decreases have become such that they will no longer fit on the circular needle.

Special Stitches

1/1 RPC: Sl 1 stitch onto the cable needle and hold in back, k1, p1 from the cable needle.
1/1 LPC: Sl 1 stitch onto the cable needle and hold in front, p1, k1 from the cable needle.

Pattern

Using smaller needles, CO 130 stitches, place marker, and join to work in the round being careful not to twist the stitches.
Establish ribbing as follows:
K2, *p2, k2, p2, k4, repeat from * to last 4 stitches, p2, k2.
Repeat this ribbing pattern for 11 additional rounds.
Switch to larger needles.
