Rearrange sts so that 6 (8, 8) sts for top of hand are on one DPN and 6 (8, 8) sts for palm of hand are on another. Use Kitchener st to graft together.
Thumb
Transfer 11 thumb sts from waste yarn onto DPNs. Pick up and knit 5 sts where thumb meets hand, distribute as you like on the needles. Pm to mark beg of rnd. (16 sts total for thumb)
Knit for 12 rnds or until thumb is approx. 0.5” shorter than desired length.

Break yarn and thread tail on a tapestry needle. Weave needle through rem sts.
Finishing
