Woodland Bunny – Easter Version

Woodland bunny is so happy it’s finally Easter. After all, it is the holiday with the best candy of any in all the land. And a new holiday means it’s time for new accessories! This version of our charming Woodland Bunny (originally published in 2016) features an adorable vest-and-hat set, a carrot, an Easter basket and eggs! You can find the original design here.

Gauge: 20 sts x 28 rnds =  4” [10 cm] in St st before stuffing

18 sts x 28 rnds =  4” [10 cm] in St st after stuffing

Materials

Yarn: Universal Yarn Deluxe DK Superwash (100% superwash wool; 284 yards [259 meters]/100 grams): 828 Pulp (A), 850 Heather (B), 822 Classic Pink (C), 817 Sky (D), 807 Ginseng (E), 809 Lime Tree (F), 804 Nectarine (G): 1 ball each color

Needles: US size 4 (3.5 mm) set of dpns, straight

Notions: Tapestry needle, polyester stuffing, stitch holder

Special Stitches

I-Cord: * K4, slide sts to other end of dpn and place in left hand; rep from *.

I-Cord Bind-Off: CO 3 sts. * k2, k2tog tbl; rep from * until all sts have been bound-off. BO rem 3 sts.

Pattern

Basket

With E, CO 8 sts leaving a 6” tail. Divide evenly bet dpns and join to work in the rnd, being careful not to twist.

Base

Rnd 1: Purl.

Rnd 2: * K1, m1; rep from * to end – 16 sts.

Rnd 3: Purl.

Rnd 4: * K2, m1; rep from * to end – 24 sts.

Rnd 5: Purl.

Rnd 6: * K3, m1; rep from * to end – 32 sts.

Rnd 7: Purl.

Rnd 8: * K4, m1; rep from * to end – 40 sts.

Rnd 9: Purl.

Rnd 10: * K5, m1; rep from * to end – 48 sts.

Rnd 11: Purl.

Rnd 12: * K6, m1; rep from * to end – 56 sts.

Rnd 13: Purl.

Rnd 14: Knit.

Weave in CO tail.

Main Basket

Rnds 1-3: * K1, p1; rep from * to end.

Rnd 4: * P1, k1; rep from * to end.

Rep Rnds 1-4, 2 more times, then rep Rnd 1-3, 1 more time.

Dec rnd: * P4, p2tog; rep from * to end – 8 sts dec’d, 40 sts rem. Knit 1 rnd. BO all sts using the I-Cord method.

Handle

With E, CO 4 sts. Make an I-Cord 6” long. BO. Sew ends of I-Cord inside top edge of Basket.

Egg

(make 2 each with B & C, 1 with D)

CO 8 sts leaving a 6” tail. Divide evenly bet dpns and join to work in the rnd, being careful not to twist. Knit 1 rnd.

Rnd 1: * K1, m1; rep from * to end – 8 sts inc’d, 16 sts.

Rnd 2: Knit.

Rnd 3: * K4, m1; rep from * to end – 4 sts inc’d, 20 sts.

Rnds 4-9: Knit.

Weave in CO tail.

Rnd 10: * K3, k2tog; rep from * to end – 4 sts dec’d. 16 sts rem.

Rnd 11: Knit.

Rnd 12: * K2, k2tog; rep from * to end – 4 sts dec’d, 12 sts rem.

Rnd 13: Knit.

Stuff firmly.

Rnd 14: * K1, k2tog; rep from * to end – 4 sts dec’d, 8 sts rem. Break yarn leaving a 6” tail. Pass tail through rem live sts. Pull taut, fasten off.

Carrot

With G, CO 6 sts leaving a 6” tail. Divide evenly bet dpns and join to work in the rnd, being careful not to twist. Knit 1 rnd.

Rnd 1: * K1, m1; rep from * to end – 6 sts inc’d, 12 sts.

Rnd 2: Knit.

Rnd 3: * K2, m1; rep from * to end – 6 sts inc’d, 18 sts.

Rnds 4-15: Knit.

Rnd 16: * K4, k2tog; rep from * to end – 3 sts dec’d, 15 sts rem.

Rnds 17-21: Knit.

Rnd 22: * K3, k2tog; rep from * to end – 3 sts dec’d, 12 sts rem.

Rnds 23-27: Knit.

Rnd 28: * K2, k2tog; rep from * to end – 3 sts dec’d, 9 sts rem.

Rnds 29-33: Knit.

Rnd 34: * K1, k2tog; rep from * to end – 3 sts dec’d, 6 sts rem.

Stuff firmly.

Rnds 35-39: Knit.

Rnd 40: * K2tog; rep from * to end – 3 sts dec’d, 3 sts rem. Break yarn leaving a 6” tail. Pass tail through rem live sts. Pull taut, fasten off.

Cut 6, 10” pieces of F. Attach to CO edge of Carrot with an overhand knot. With the tip of a dpn, carefully unply strands of yarn.

Dress

With B, CO 72 sts. Divide evenly bet dpns and join to work in the rnd, being careful not to twist. PM for beg of rnd. Purl 1 rnd, knit 1 rnd, purl 1 rnd. Break B, switch to A. Knit 1 rnd.

Next rnd: * K2tog, yo; rep from * to end. Knit 1 rnd.

Next rnd: K36, pm, k36.

Dec rnd: * K1, k2tog, knit to 3 sts bef m, ssk, k1; rep from * to end – 2 sts dec’d. Rep Dec rnd every other rnd, 7 more times – 40 sts rem. Work even in St st until piece meas 3.75” from CO edge.

Shape Front

Row 1 (RS): K1, ssk, knit to 3 sts bef m, k2tog, k1 – 18 sts rem for Front. Place rem 20 sts on holder for Back.

Row 2 (WS): P1, p2tog, purl to last 3 sts, ssp, p1 – 2 sts dec’d, 16 sts rem.

Row 3: K1, ssk, knit to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1 – 2 sts dec’d, 14 sts rem.

Row 4: Purl.

Row 5: K5, attach new ball of yarn and bind off center 4 sts, k5. Working both sides at once, dec 1 st at Neck edge every row, 2 times. Work even in St st for 3 more rows. BO all sts.

Shape Back

Work as for Shape Front. Sew one shoulder seam. Put dress on Bunny. Sew the other shoulder seam.

Bonnet

With B, CO 76 sts.

Row 1 (WS): BO 25 sts for tie, k26, BO 25 sts for tie. Break yarn.

Rejoin B to rem sts with RS facing. Knit 1 row.

Next row (WS): P12, pm, p2, pm, p12. Break B, switch to A.

Increase Section

Row 1 (RS): Knit to m, m1, sl m, k2, sl m, m1, knit to end – 2 sts inc’d.

Row 2 (WS): Purl.

Rep Rows 1-2, 4 more times – 36 sts. Remove markersWork even in St st until piece meas 2.5” from CO edge, ending with WS row.

Next row (RS): K3, BO 5 sts, knit to last 8 sts, BO 5 sts, k3.

Next row (WS): K3, CO 5 sts over gap, knit to next gap, CO 5 sts, k3.

Shape Top of Bonnet

Row 1 (RS): K16, k2tog, ssk, k16 – 2 sts dec’d, 34 sts rem.

Row 2 (WS): P15, ssp, p2tog, p15 – 2 sts dec’d, 32 sts rem.

Row 3: K14, k2tog, ssk, k14 – 2 sts dec’d, 30 sts rem.

Row 4: P13, ssp, p2tog, p13 – 2 sts dec’d, 28 sts rem.

Row 5: K12, k2tog, ssk, k12 – 2 sts dec’d, 26 sts rem.

Row 6: P11, ssp, p2tog, p11 – 2 sts dec’d, 24 sts rem.

Place first 12 sts on one ndl, place last 12 sts on separate ndl. With RS facing join top of hood with a three-ndl BO.

Hood Edging

With B and RS facing, pick up and knit 37 sts along side of Hood. Knit 2 rows. BO all sts.

With B, make a 1” pom-pom. Tie to top of Bonnet.

Grass

Cut 10, 12” pieces of F. With the tip of a dpn, carefully unply strands of yarn. Cut strands into thirds. Arrange in basket and around delightful Easter scene.
