Aztec Poncho

This piece is everything you need in a classic autumn-to-winter piece: stylish, easy to wear and warm! Knit in one piece from the top down, this tweedy showstopper will be your favorite piece in no time.

Gauge: 19 sts and 27 rows = 4” [10 cm] in Twisted Patt after wet blocking

19 sts and 24 rows = 4” [10 cm] in Fair Isle after wet blocking

Yarn:

Yarn Sizes-14 Universal Yarn Deluxe Worsted Tweed Superwash (90% Superwash Wool, 7% Acrylic, 3% Viscose; 218 yards [200 meters]/100 grams): #914 Charcoal (MC), 4 balls; #906 Aegean (CC1), 1 ball; #910 porcelain (CC2), 1 ball; #912 Ebony (CC3), 1 ball; #909 Raisin (CC4), 1 ball; 904 Olive (CC5), 1 ball

Needles: US 7 (4.5 mm): three 40” circular

Notions: Markers; tapestry needle

Pattern Notes

This poncho is worked in one piece from the top down. Work begins on a single circular needle. When there are too many stitches to fit comfortably on the needle, begin using 2 circulars and the 2 circular method. When there are too many stitches for 2 circulars, use 3.

In the Fair Isle Section, use the darker of the two colors to purl the corner stitches between markers.

This garment is sized to fit most body sizes. If extra width is desired, repeat additional rows of the Ribbing section.

The stitch patterns are charted only.

Stitch Guide

RT: K2tog but do not slip sts from needle, knit first st again, sl both sts from needle.

LT: Knit second st on left needle tbl, knit first st through the front leg, sl both sts from needle.

With MC, CO 2 sts, pm, 1, pm, (29 sts, pm, 1, pm) 3 times, 2 sts – 95 sts.

Twisted Section

Set-up Row (WS): *Purl to m, k1; rep from * 3 more times, purl to end of row.

Row 1 (RS): Work Row 1 of Left Twisted chart to m, p1, (work Row 1 of Center Twisted chart to m, p1) 3 times, work Row 1 of Right Twisted chart to end of row – 103 sts; 8 sts inc’d; 1 st each side of m.

Row 2 (WS): Work Row 2 of Right Twisted chart to m, k1, (work Row 2 of Center Twisted chart to m, k1) 3 times, work Row 2 of Left Twisted chart to end of row – 111 sts; 8 sts inc’d; 1 st each side of m.

Cont in patt as est’d. Inc rows will occur approximately 2 out of every 3 rows.

Rep Rows 1-20 of Center Twisted chart and Rows 21-40 of Left and Right Twisted charts for patt.

After 80 total rows, there are 543 sts; 58 sts each Left and Right Increase sections; 141 sts each Center Increase section.

Fair Isle Section

Row 1 (RS): Work Row 1 of Left Fair Isle chart to m, p1 (see Pattern Notes), (work Row 1 of Center Fair Isle chart to m, p1) 3 times, work Row 1 of Right Fair Isle chart to end – 8 sts inc’d.

Row 2 (WS):  Work Row 2 of Right Fair Isle chart to m, k1, [work Row 2 of Center Fair Isle chart to m, k1] 3 times, work Row 2 of Left Fair Isle chart to end – 551 sts; 8 sts inc’d.

Cont in patt as est’d through Row 37 of charts. Inc rows will occur approximately 5 out of every 6 rows. After Row 37 of charts, there are 791 sts; 89 sts each Left and Right Increase sections; 203 sts each Center Increase section.

Ribbing Section

Row 1 (RS): Work Row 1 of Left Ribbing chart to m, p1 (see Pattern Notes), (work Row 1 of Center Ribbing chart to m, p1) 3 times, work Row 1 of Right Ribbing chart to end – 8 sts inc’d.

Row 2 (WS): Work Row 2 of Right Ribbing chart to m, k1, [work Row 2 of Center Ribbing chart to m, k1] 3 times, work Row 2 of Left Ribbing chart to end – 559 sts; 8 sts inc’d.

Cont in patt as est’d through Row 8 of charts. Inc rows will occur approximately 2 out of every 3 rows. After Row 8 of charts, there are 839 sts; 95 sts each Left and Right Increase sections; 215 sts each Center Increase section.

Bind off all sts.

Finishing

Block piece to finished measurements.

Front Edging

With MC, pick up and knit 96 sts along Right Front from hem to cast-on, 31 sts along cast-on edge, pm, 29 sts along center section of cast-on edge, pm, 31 sts along cast-on edge, and 96 sts along Left front to Hem – 283 sts.

Row 1 (WS): *(P1, k1) to 1 st before m, p1; rep from * once more, (p1, k1) to last st, p1.

Row 2 (RS): *K to 2 sts before m, ssk, sl m, k2tog; rep from * once more, k to end of row – 279 sts; 4 sts dec’d.

Row 3: *(P1, k1) to 2 sts before m, p2tog, sl m, ssp; rep from * once more, (k1, p1) to end of row – 275 sts; 4 sts dec’d.

Rows 4-7: Rep Rows 2-3, twice more – 259 sts.

Bind off all sts over the next RS row.

Weave in ends. Block Front Edging.
