Gauge: 18 sts and 19 rows = 4” [10 cm] in pattern

Materials

Yarn: Rico Design Baby Cotton Soft DK (50% Cotton, 50% Acrylic); 136 yards [124 meters]/50 grams:  Blue (A, 2 balls), Yellow (B, 2 balls)

Needles: US size 5 (3.75 mm) straight; US size 10 (6mm) straight

Notions: Tapestry needle.

Pattern Notes

The yarn overs at the beginning of the rows are made in the same way as you make a yarn over in the middle of a row – by taking the yarn from the front to the back of the work to form a new stitch.

Be careful to ensure your gauge doesn’t become uneven on one side of the triangle. If any sts look uneven after you have bound off, you can use the tip of a knitting needle to even them out.

Don’t worry if the work curls as you are knitting. This is natural for stockinette and it should be flattened out during the finishing.

Pattern

First (set-up) Triangle

Using A and smaller needles, make a slip knot and secure on LH needle. (1 st)

Next Row (WS): Wyif yo, p1. (2 sts)

Next Row (RS): Wyif yo, k to end. (3 sts)

Next Row: Wyif yo, p to end. (4 sts)

Rep last 2 rows until there are 45 sts, finishing on a WS row.

Next Row (RS): Knit. Your work will be triangular with 22 loops made by the yos on each of the shorter sides.

BO and break yarn.

Color B Triangle

Keeping RS facing, flip work so that the longest side of the triangle just worked is closest to you. You will be picking up the loops made by the yos from the RH side of this triangle starting with the loop closest to the long side and finishing at the point. You will be picking up a single strand of yarn

Using B and smaller needles, make a slip knot and secure on LH needle. (1 st)

Next Row (RS): Wyif yo, k1, pu and k tbl first loop on RH side of previous triangle. (3 sts)

Next Row (WS): Purl.

Next Row: Wyif yo, k to end, pu and k tbl next loop on RH side of previous triangle. (5 sts)

Next Row: Purl.

Rep last 2 rows until there are 45 sts. You should have 22 loops down the RH side of the Triangle just worked.

Next Row: Knit.

BO and break yarn.

Color A Triangle

Turn to WS and flip work so that the longest side of the triangle just worked is closest to you. You will be picking up loops in the same way as the previous triangle, but from the WS.

Using A and smaller needles, make a slip knot and secure on LH needle. (1 st)

Next Row (WS): Wyif yo, p1, pu and p first loop on RH side of previous triangle. (3 sts)

Next Row (RS): Knit.

Next Row: Wyif yo, p to end, pu and p next loop on RH side of previous triangle. (5 sts)

Next Row: Knit.

Rep last 2 rows until there are 45 sts. You should have 22 loops down the RH side of the Triangle just worked.

BO all sts. Break yarn.

Turn so RS is facing.

Rep last 2 Triangles 4 more times. You should now have 6 Triangles in A and 5 in B.

You will now work the Final Triangle which will join the First Triangle worked with the last.

Final Triangle

With B, make a slip knot and secure on LH needle. (1 st)

Next Row (RS): Wyif yo, k1, pu and k tbl first loop on RH side of previous triangle. (2 sts)

Turn work, being very careful not to twist. You will now be picking up the first loop on the side of the First Triangle.

Next Row (WS): Wyif yo, p2, pu and p first loop on RH side of First Triangle. (3 sts)

Next Row: Turn work. Wyif yo, k to end, pu and k tbl first loop on RH side of previous triangle. (4 sts)

Next Row: Turn work. Wyif yo, p to end, pu and p first loop on RH side of First Triangle. (5 sts)

Rep last 2 rows until there are 45 sts and all loops have been picked up.

Next Row: Knit.

BO all sts. Break yarn.

Finishing

Press work gently with a cool iron under a damp cloth to block. Then work borders.

Borders

With RS facing, hold work so that the long BO edges of B are at the top. Starting at the RH side of any Triangle along this edge, using A and larger needles, pu and k first st from BO edge. *Pu and k next st, then pass previous st over this; rep from * until 45 sts of Triangle have been picked up. You should have 1 st on needle.

Pick up 1 st from point of adjacent A Triangle and pass previous st over this. Without breaking yarn, repeat until Border has been worked across entire border.

Break yarn and use a tapestry needle to join to first st of Border invisibly by drawing yarn through the first Border st.

Turn work and repeat using A, for the other Border.

Weave in ends. Pin to measurements and under a damp cloth with a cool iron to block.
