Sleeping Unicorn Princess Scarf

Materials

Yarn: Garnstudio Drops Eskimo (100% New Wool; 54 yards [50 meters]/50 grams): 01 Off White (MC, 4 (5, 6) balls), 05 Petrol (CC1, 1 (1, 1) ball), 12 Light Blue (CC2, 1 (1, 1) ball), 26 Hot Pink (CC3, 1 (1, 1) ball), 30 Pastel Pink (CC4, 1 (1, 1) ball), 53 Light Grey (CC5, 1 (1, 1) ball), 54 Light Purple CC6, 1 (1, 1) balls, 37 Sapphire (CC7, 1 (1, 1) ball), 02 Black (CC8, 1 (1, 1) ball)

Needles: US size 11 (8 mm) 24” straight and circular needles/ dpns

Special Stitches

Note about Short Rows (SR): I used the German method of creating short rows in the scarf. Use whichever method you prefer. If you are working the “wrap and turn” method, work this at the turning point and ignore the “SR” instruction at the start of the following row, then work the wrapped stitches together with their wraps as you come to them. As you are working in garter st, the wraps don’t need to be hidden as they will blend in.

German Short Rows

Bring yarn to the front, sl st purlwise and bring yarn up, over, and back to pull on the slipped st until it slides around to show two legs. Keeping the yarn at the back in order to k next st while keeping the tension. When working the stitch, the next time you meet it, work the “doubled stitch” as if it was one st, that is, work the two legs together.

Kitchener Stitch:

Thread a tapestry needle with yarn. Hold the needles with the live sts parallel.

Set up: Insert the tapestry needle through the first st on the front needle purlwise and pull the yarn through but leave the st on the needle. Insert the needle through the first st on the back needle knitwise and pull the yarn through, again leaving the st on the back needle.

*Insert the needle through the first st on the front needle knitwise, pull the yarn through and drop the st off the front needle. Insert the needle through the next st on the front needle as if to purl, pull the yarn through but leave the st on the needle. Insert the needle through the first st on the back needle purlwise, pull the yarn through, dropping the st off the back needle. Insert the needle through the next st on the back needle knitwise and pull the yarn through, leaving the st on the needle. Rep from * until all sts are worked.

Pattern Notes

The Unicorn head is worked in the round first, before being sewn together and lightly stuffed. Sleeping features are sewn on. Ears are worked separately, shaped and stuffed. The Unicorn’s horn is worked in three pieces before twisting together and securing to the face.

The scarf is worked in garter stitch and shaped with short rows to sit comfortably around the neck. The scarf closes by threading the tail end through a channel created by sewing on the head. A tail and mane are added using various shades of purple yarn tassels.

Pattern

Head

With MC, CO 4, (6, 6) sts. Join in the rnd, being careful not to twist the sts. Pm to mark beg of rnd.

Rnd 1: Kfb in each st to end of rnd. (8 (12, 12) sts)

Rnd 2 and all even rnds: Knit.

Rnd 3: (K1, m1, k2 (4, 4), m1, k1) twice. (12 (16, 16) sts)

Rnd 5: (K1, m1, k4 (6, 6), m1, k1) twice. (16 (20, 20) sts)

Rnd 7: (K1, m1, k6 (8, 8), m1, k1) twice. (20 (24, 24) sts)

Rnd 9: (K1, m1, k8 (10, 10), m1, k1) twice. (24 (28, 28) sts)

Cont in dec patt established until 16 sts rem.

Stuff Head with toy stuffing. Sew CO opening closed.

Divide live sts evenly over 2 DPNs and graft together using Kitchener Stitch.

Using tapestry needle and CC8, sew on sleepy features on the face of the Unicorn.

Inner Ear (make 2)

With CC4, CO 5 sts.

Rows 1-4: Knit.

Row 5: Ssk, k1, k2tog. (3 sts)

Row 6: Knit.

Row 7: Ssk, k1. (2 sts)

Row 8: K2togtbl. (1 st)

Break yarn and pull through live st to fasten off.

Outer Ear (make 2)

With MC, CO 7 sts.

Rows 1-4: Work in St st.

Row 5: K2, CDD, k2. (5 sts)

Row 6: Purl.

Row 7: K1, CDD, k1. (3 sts)

Row 8: Purl.

Row 9: CDD. (1 st)

Break yarn and pull through live st to fasten off.

Sew one Inner Ear and one Outer Ear together using a tapestry needle and MC, leaving a gap to stuff. Lightly stuff Ears, sew gap closed, and attach to head of Unicorn, using photos as a guide.

Horn

Note: Make 3 pieces, one in CC5, one in CC2, and one in CC7. Each piece is an i-cord which decrease every 4 rnds.

CO 5 sts.

Work 4 rnds in i-cord.

Next Rnd: K2tog, work to end. (4 sts)

Work 3 rnds in i-cord.

Rep last 4 rnds 3 more times. (1 st)

Break yarn and pull through live st to fasten off.

To make Horn, sew 3 i-cords together at the base with tapestry needle and matching yarn. Twist the pieces clockwise and secure with stitches as you twist. Cont to work towards the points, creating a spiral and using photos as a guide.

Sew Horn on to the Unicorn’s head, using the photos as a guide.

Scarf

With MC, CO 16 (20, 24) sts.

Row 1: Sl1, k to end.

Row 2: Sl1, k14, turn work.

Row 3 and all odd number rows: SR, k to end

Row 4: Sl1, k12, turn work

Row 6: Sl1, k10, turn work

Row 8: Sl1, k8, turn work

Row 10: Sl1, k6, turn work.

Row 12: Sl1, k4, turn work.

Row 13: Sl1, k to end, working each double st as one st.

Rows 14-19: Knit

Rep Rows 2-19, 9 (11, 13) more times.

Tail End

Row 1: Sl1, k until 1 st rem, turn work

Row 2: SR, k until 1 st rem, turn work.

Rep Row 2 until 2 sts rem between short rows.

Next Row: K to end, working each double st as 1 st.

Knit 1 row.

BO all sts.

Finishing

Weave in all ends and block to dimensions.

Sew Head onto Scarf, creating a channel which the tail can thread through.

Using CC4, CC2, CC7, CC1, CC3, and CC6 to create tassels for the mane and tail of the Unicorn.

Use the crochet hook to attach the tassels to the Scarf.
