Time: 2 Hour Pattern
Skill Level: Easy
Size: Adult 8.5” high x 20″ circumference at brim
Gauge: 7 sts and 11 rows = 4” [10 cm] in St st after gently steam blocking
Materials
Yarn: Knit Collage dreamland (99% wool, 1% polyester; 35 yards [32 meters]/125 grams): Sunstone 1 skein
Needles: US size 15 (10.0 mm) 21” circular needles, 2 sets or 1 set DPNs
Notions: Markers, tapestry needle, 1” button, pompom
Pattern Notes
This pattern is worked in the round from the brim up to the crown.
When working the findings which are found in the yarn, push them through to the right side of the work. Use steam to manipulate the fabric findings to be the desired shape during finishing.
When slipping stitches, slip as if to purl holding yarn on WS of the work.
To provide for a more flattering crown the decreases are not done along a specific axis, the positioning of the decreases is variable to let the yarn take center stage throughout.
Pattern
Using a long tail cast on and one circular needle or the dpns, cast on 36 sts. PM to denote end of round.
Rnd 1 and 3: *K1, p1, rep from * to end of round.
Rnd 2: *K1, s1, rep from * to end of round.
Rnd 3: *K9, m1, rep from * to end of round. (4 sts inc, 40 sts total)
Rnd 4: Knit to end of round.
Continue knitting in the round until work measures 6.5″ and proceed to crown.
Crown
Rnd 1: *K8, k2tog, rep from * to end of round. (4 sts dec, 36 sts total)
Rnd 2: *K4, k2tog, rep from * to end of round. (6 sts dec, 30 sts total)
Rnd 3: *K3, k2tog, rep from * to end of round. (6 sts dec, 24 sts total)
Rnd 4: *K4, k2tog, rep from * to end of round. (4 sts dec, 20 sts total)
Rnd 5: *K2, k2tog, rep from * to end of round. (5 sts dec, 15 sts total)
Rnd 6: *K1, k2tog, rep from * to end of round. (5 sts dec, 10 sts total)
Rnd 7: Knit 2 together to end of round (5 sts)
Break yarn leaving 4″ tail if no pompom is desired, 10″ tail if pompom is to be added.
Using tapestry needle, weave tail through all remaining stitches, gently pull to close top of crown.
Finishing
Steam finished hat to relax stitches and findings in the fabric.
Push any remaining findings on the WS to the RS.
If desired, attach pompom using tail at top of crown.
Weave in ends.
