Ski Summit Convertible Cowl-Beanie Pattern

For the ski lovers, this versatile piece is designed to be worn both as a cowl or a beanie. On the top edge, a cotton cord threaded through an eyelet round allows it to be cinched for wearing as a hat or left loose when used as a cowl.

Time: 6–8-hour pattern.

Skill Level: Intermediate.

Size: 14.5 (18, 21.5)“ [36.5, (45, 53.75) cm] circumference X 10” [25 cm] height.  

1” negative ease recommended.

Gauge: 20 sts and 40 rows = 4” [10 cm] in mosaic pattern after wet blocking.

Materials

Yarn: Wooldreamers La Rinconada (100% organic Spanish Merino wool; 252 yards [230 meters]/ 3.6 ounces [100 grams]: 0-Blanco (MC, 1/2 skein), J-Tierra (CC1,1/5 skein).626-V-Rosa over Niebla (CC2, 1/5 skein).

Needles: US size 6 / 4.0 mm and US size 8 / 5.0 mm circular needles.

Notions: Scissors, tapestry needle, 30” of cotton cord (1/8” diameter), cord fastener, 2 wooden beads.

Pattern Notes

This pattern is worked bottom-up in the round mainly in mosaic colorwork: Top and bottom edges are folded and seamed. The top edge (worked flat) allows to add the cord.

With smaller needles and MC, CO 73 (91,109) sts. join in the rnd, being careful to not twist the sts.

Sl first CO st from LHN to RHN, pass the last CO st over slipped st. Place beg of rnd (BOR) marker. (72 (90, 108) sts)

Rnds 1-8: Knit.

Rnd 9: *K1, p1; rep from* to end.

Rnd 10: With CC1, *K1, sl1wyib; rep from* to end.

Rnd 11: With MC, *K1, p1; rep from* to end.

Rnd 12: With CC2, *K1, sl1wyib; rep from* to end.

Rnd 13-15: Rep Rows 9-11.

Rnd 16-19: Knit

Body

Change to larger needles.

Rnds 1- 70: Follow chart instructions, repeating the pattern of 18 sts 4 (5, 6) times.

Top Edge

Change to smaller needles

Rnds 1-2: With MC, knit

Rnd 3: *K1, p1; rep from* to end.

Rnd 4: With CC1, *K1, sl1wyib; rep from* to end.

Rnd 5: With MC, *K1, p1; rep from* to end.

Rnd 6: With CC2, *K1, sl1wyib; rep from* to end.

Rnd 7-9: Rep Rows 3-5.

Row 1 (RS): knit to end, turn

Row 2 (WS): purl to end, turn

Rows 3-6: Rep Rows [1-2] 2 more times.

Bind-off.

Finishing

Fold Bottom and Top edges and seam with MC.

Weave in ends. Wash and block.

Pass the cotton cord through the inner top edge, add the cord fastener and the wooden beads, ending with a strong knot.
