Dear Mitten Knitter,

Whether you watched the Biden Inauguration or not, no doubt afterward you saw the hundreds of memes on social media featuring Senator Bernie Sanders sitting alone in the bleachers, arms crossed against the cold, wearing the now iconic mittens. There was Bernie at the Great Wall of China, Bernie on the sofa with the Friends cast, Bernie with Forrest Gump, on Seinfeld, on the moon—you name it. Bernie was everywhere! But one thing the memes all had in common was–the mittens!

And that’s no surprise—Bernie’s mittens look warm, cozy, and classic with a hint of Fair Isle sweater styling. Who wouldn’t love to snuggle their hands into them? Luckily, we have a FREE Inauguration Mittens Pattern so you can make your own knitted Bernie-inspired mittens.

Think of it: the Bernie mittens broke the internet and everybody is trying to get their hands on—and in—a pair of sweater mittens like Bernie’s. His are one-of-a-kind, made from recycled sweaters. But because you’re an experienced knitter, you don’t have to search online for these elusive mittens, you can make your own!

Knitters love mitten patterns, and this Inauguration Mittens pattern is unique

The Inauguration Mittens pattern in this free download is so fun to put together, with different colors and designs on the fronts and backs.

For this free download, you’ll need two sets of double-pointed needles, size 8 and 9, a tapestry needle for the Kitchener stitch, and Aran-weight yarn in seven colors to give your mittens that bulky sweater-like look and warm, cozy feel.

We give you everything else you need—the pattern with full directions, photos, and color charts to make it easy for you to create that very now famous mitten design—with our free download, the Inauguration Mittens Pattern.

Speaking of warm and cozy, did you know that mittens tend to keep your hands warmer than gloves? That’s because your fingers generate more heat when they’re not separated as they are in gloves. Bernie—who lives in frigid Vermont—obviously knows this!

With your FREE copy of the Inauguration Mittens Pattern that you can download right now, you’ll learn all you need to know about knitting these meme-worthy mittens!

About the Free Inauguration Mittens Pattern

The knitting pattern for these mittens features a Fair Isle style motif on the backs and a geometric design on the palms. We’re showing it in seven colors: maroon cuffs with medium brown, white, tan, and dark brown on the backs—mimicking Bernie’s mittens—and deep teal, navy, and white on the palms.

The gauge as written will produce a pair of mittens that will fit an average sized woman’s hand. For larger mittens, try increasing needle size and/or yarn weight. Maybe you want yours a bit oversized, like Bernie’s!

Imagine how much you’ll love wearing—or gifting—these internet-famous mittens. They’ll not only keep your hands toasty warm, but you’re sure to smile when you think of the Bernie memes. Once you’ve finished the mittens, take a pic with them on and head for the meme generator!

I absolutely adore your pattern for Bernie’s Inauguration Mittens! Unfortunately, I’m a crocheted not a knitter. Do you have or are you planning to release the crochet pattern for these mittens?
