Size:10.25-11” / [26-28 cm] foot length x 9” / [23 cm] foot circumference to fit Men’s shoe size 9-11.5” (US), 8.5 (UK), 42.5-45 (Eur)

Gauge: 22 sts and 29 rows = 4” [10 cm] in St st after wet blocking

31 sts and 30 rows = 4” [10 cm] in pattern st after wet blocking.

Materials

Yarn: Novita 7 Veljestä (75% Wool, 25% Polyamide; 328 yards [300 meters]/150 grams): #043 Kivi (MC 1, balls), #021 Petrol (CC,1 ball)

Needles: US size 4 (3.5 mm) set of 5 DPNs.

Notions: Tapestry needle, cable needle, stitch markers (optional).

Abbreviations

2/2LC = Sl 2 to cn. Hold in front. K2, k2 from cn.
2/2RC = Sl 2 to cn. Hold in back. K2, k2 from cn.

Special Stitches

Diagonal Basketweave Stitch (worked over a multiple of 18 sts)

Row 1: K2, (2/2LC) 4 times.
Row 2: K18.
Row 3: (2/2RC) 4 times, k2.

Row 4: K18.

Rep Rows 1-4 for patt.

Socks worked one at a time, from the top down.

Features you will love: Knit from the top down, the main stitch pattern starts within the ribbing for a modern look, wedge toe (no Kitchener stitches!), uses only 5.2 oz / 150 grams, so one skein is enough.

Add a cool contrast color stripe.

Leg

CO 66 sts onto a single needle. The long-tail cast-on method was used for sample but any CO can be used that gives a nice stretchy edge.

Divide sts on the 4 needles as (needle 1) 11 sts, (needle 2) 22 sts, (needle 3) 11 sts, (needle 4) 22 sts. Join to work in the rnd, being careful to not twist sts.

Needles 1 & 3: *P1, k1; rep from * to end of needle.

Needles 2 & 4: Work Row 1 of Diagonal Basketweave Stitch patt.

Work ribbing and Diagonal Basketweave Stitch patt as set for approx. 1.5” / [4 cm].  After working needles 1 or 3 in ribbing, switch to CC.

Work 4 rnds of CC as follows:

Needles 1 & 3: work in St st.

Needles 2 & 4: work in Diagonal Basketweave Stitch patt.

Switch back to MC and cont in St st and Diagonal Basketweave Stitch patt as set above until Leg meas approx. 7” / [17 cm], finish with either Row 1 or 3 of the Diagonal Basketweave Stitch patt.

On the next rnd, divide sts as follow:

Needle 1: K2tog, k9, ssk.

Needle 2: Work in pattern (either Row 2 or 4, depending where you left off in patt).

Needle 3: K2tog, k4. Slip the rem 5 sts without working to needle 4.

Needle 4: K3, ssk, work the 22 sts in patt, k4 sts from needle 1.

Needle 4 has now 30 sts (4 + 22 + 4). Divide the rem 32 sts (the instep) on to 2 needles. (16 sts on one needle, 16 sts on the other)

Heel Flap

The heel flap will be worked back and forth on needle 4.

Next Row (WS): K4, work 22 sts in patt (but instead of knit, purl patt Rows 2 and 4), k4.

Next Row (RS): K4, work 22 sts in pattern, k4.

Cont working as set above for 31 rows.

Heel Turn

Next Row (RS): K15, k2tog, k1.

Next Row (WS): Sl1p, p3, p2tog, p1.

Next Row: Sl1k, k4, k2tog, k1.

Next Row: Sl1p, p5, p2tog, p1.

Next Row: Sl1k, k6, k2tog, k1.

Next Row: Sl1p, p7, p2tog, p1.

Needle 4 has now 17sts and the yarn is in the left edge of the heel flap. Divide the heel flap sts on 2 needles; 9 sts on one, 8 sts on the other. These are now needles 1 and 4 and in the future the row count will change in the middle of the heel flap.

With a free needle, pick up 1 st between instep and the left edge of heel flap, then pick up 14 sts along the left edge of heel flap. K to needle 1 (24 sts). On the instep (with needles 2 and 3) k5, k22 sts in patt (cont from the row you were left on), k5. To needle 4, pick up 14 sts along the right edge of heel flap, then pick up 1 st between heel flap and instep. K all the 24 sts. The yarn is now in the middle of the heel flap, between needles 4 and 1. (86 sts total)

Foot and Gusset

Start shaping the gusset.

Dec Rnd: Needle 1: K until 2 sts left on needle, k2tog.

Needles 2 & 3: Cont working the instep sts in Diagonal Basketweave Stitch patt.

Needle 4: Ssk, k to end of rnd.

Rep Dec Rnd every second rnd until there are 15 sts on needles 1 and 4. (62 sts total)

Cont working in St st and in Diagonal Basketweave Stitch patt over the 22 instep sts. When Foot meas approx. 8.5” / [21 cm] or 1.5” / [3.8 cm] shorter than desired finished length, beg shaping the toe.

Toe Shaping

Dec Rnd: Needle 1: K to the last 3 sts on the needle, k2tog, k1.

Needle 2: K1, ssk, cont working in patt.

Needle 3: Work in patt until 3 sts rem, k2tog, k1.

Needle 4: K1, ssk, k to end of rnd.

Rep Dec Rnd every second rnd until there are 12 sts on needle 1, 13 sts on needle 2, 13 sts on needle 3, and 12 sts on needles 4.

Work all sts in St st while decreasing on every rnd.

When the sole has 6 sts total and the instep 8 sts total, cut the yarn.

With a tapestry needle, pull tail through the rem sts and poke needle to the inside of sock.

Finishing

Turn sock inside out and weave in the ends.

Block sock if desire.
