Work in Garter st as folls:
Row 1: K to end.
Row 2 (WS): Sl1 wyib, sl1 wyif, k to last 2 sts, sl1 wyif, k1.
Row 3 (RS): Sl1 wyif, k to last st, p1.
Rep last 2 rows until piece meas 4 (4.25, 5, 6, 6.25)” / [10 (11, 13, 15, 16) cm], ending with WS row.
Work belt loops as folls:
Set-up Row (RS): Sl1 wyif, k16 (17, 19, 20, 22) sts, (kfb, place increased st at waste yarn) 4 times, k to 21 (22, 24, 25, 27) sts from end, (kfb, place increased st at waste yarn) 4 times, k to last st, p1.
You have 2 scraps of waste yarn in front of work with 4 sts at each of them. Do not work them until further instructions.
Row 1 (WS): Sl1 wyib, sl1 wyif, k to last 2 sts, sl1 wyif, k1.
Row 2 (RS): Sl1 wyif, k to last st, p1.
Rep last 2 rows twice more, then Row 1 (WS) once more. Put the piece aside.
Belt Loops
Now you will work Belt Loops on scraps of waste yarn.
Place 4 sts from waste yarn to a DPN. Join a new yarn ball and work 8 rows in Garter st.
Set this Belt Loop aside and rep for 2nd Belt Loop.
Join Belt Loops to Body
Set up Row (RS): Sl1 wyif, k16 (17, 19, 20, 22) sts, place a DPN with open Belt Loop sts in front of left needle (be careful not to twist the loop), (insert right needle into next st on DPN, insert right needle into first st on left needle and knit them tog) 4 times more, k to 21 (22, 24, 25, 27) sts to end, place a DPN with open Belt Loop sts in front of left needle (be careful not to twist the loop), (insert right needle into next st on DPN, insert right needle into first st on left needle and knit them tog) 4 times more, k to last st, p1.

Why are there belt loops on a vest?
Hi Ellen! This vest was designed to be worn with a belt, but you know how kids can be. She didn’t feel like wearing the belt for the photos and so we just went with it. 🙂
