Honeycomb Sweater

This top down Honeycomb Sweater is the ideal autumn pullover. Featuring a wide, loose neckline and a sloping bottom hem that’s slightly longer in the back than in the front, this sweater pairs perfectly with jeans for a casual night out.

Skill Level: Intermediate

Size: Finished bust circumference = 36 (41, 44, 49, 54, 56.25, 59)” to fit bust size 30 (34, 38, 44, 48, 51, 54)”; 4-6” positive ease recommended

Gauge: 25 sts x 50 rows = 4” on larger needles after wet blocking

Materials

Yarn:

Super fine weight yarn Quince & Co. Finch (100% wool; 221 yards [202 meters]/50 grams): Cypress (7 (8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13) skeins)
Needles: US size 6 (4.0 mm) 29” circular needle, US size 5 (3.75 mm) 29” circular needle, US size 6 (4.0 mm) and US size 5 (3.75 mm) DPNs
Notions: Stitch markers, tapestry needle, scrap yarn or stitch holders

Honeycomb Pattern – Flat

Row 1 (WS) and all WS rows: Purl across.
Row 2: *K1, sl3wyif; rep from * to 1 st from end, k1.
Row 4: As Row 2.
Row 6: K2, *insert needle, under all the slipped stitch strands below, and knit the next stitch, bringing the strands over and off the right needle, k3; rep from * to 3 sts from end, work slip stitch pick up, k2.
Row 8: K2, *k1, sl3wyif; rep from * to 3 sts from end, k3.
Row 10: As Row 8.
Row 12: K4, *insert needle, under all the slipped stitch strands below, and knit the next stitch, bringing the strands over and off the right needle, k3; rep from * to 1 st from end, k1.
Work these 12 rows to make patt.

Honeycomb Pattern – In the Round

Rnd 1 and all odd-numbered rows: Knit across.
Rnd 2: *K1, sl3wyif; rep from * around.
Rnd 4: As Rnd 2.
Rnd 6: K2, *insert needle, under all the slipped stitch strands below, and knit the next stitch, bringing the strands over and off the right needle, k3; rep from * to 2 sts from end, work slip stitch pick up, k1.
Rnd 8: K2, *k1, sl3wyif; rep from * to 2 sts from end, k1, sl3wyif (crossing BOR M).
Rnd 10: As Rnd 8.
Rnd 12: *insert needle under all the slipped stitch strands below, and knit the next stitch, bringing the strands over and off the right needle, k3; rep from * to end.
Work these 12 rnds to make patt.

Pattern

Left Front Shoulder

With larger circular needle and using a provisional cast-on method, CO 29 (33, 33, 41, 45, 49, 53) sts and begin working back and forth. Work 4 rows in Patt, ending with a Row 4.
Row 5: Purl to end of row, CO 6 sts. (35 (39, 39, 47, 51, 55, 59) sts)
Row 6: K across CO sts, work in Patt to end.
Row 7: Purl to end, CO 1 st. (36 (40, 40, 48, 52, 56, 60) sts)
Row 8: K1, work in Patt to end.
Row 9: As Row 7. (37 (41, 41, 49, 53, 57, 61) sts)
Row 10: K2, work in Patt to end.

Back Left Shoulder

Join Front and Back in the Round

Work across back section in Row 12 of Patt, place front stitches on LH needle, work across front section in Row 12 of Patt—224 (256, 272, 304, 336, 352, 368) sts. PM, join to work in the rnd, and begin working piece in the rnd, beginning with Rnd 1 of Honeycomb Patt in the round. Work as established till piece meas 14” from underarm join, ending with a Rnd 11, break yarn.

Begin Short Row Shaping

Rearrange Stitches
Slip 75 (83, 87, 95, 103, 107, 111) sts from RH needle to LH needle and PM for new BOR. Join yarn, k1, work Rnd 6 of Patt to 3 sts from end of new BOR, k2, work picked up sts.

Work Wrap and Turn Rows

Nxt row: W&T, work Row 1 of Patt to 34 sts from initial wrapped st, W&T, *work to 8 sts from wrapped st, W&T; rep from * 1 (1, 1, 3, 5, 5, 5) time[s] more, then *work to 4 sts from wrapped st, W&T; rep from * 31 (39, 43, 43, 43, 47, 47, 51) times more, then *work to 8 sts from wrapped st, W&T; rep from * 1 (1, 1, 3, 5, 5, 5) time[s] more. PM for new BOR, and remove previous BOR M.
Nxt rnd: Knit around, picking up and knitting all wraps together with wrapped stitches, and picking up and knitting any floated st left unknitted, including single floated sts, ending at new BOR M.
Nxt rnd: Do not switch to smaller needles, *k1, p3; rep from * to end. Work in rib patt 1”, BO all sts in patt.

Shoulder Finishing

Block sweater in preparation for picking up sleeves and joining shoulder seams.
Remove provisional stitches and place sts from shoulders on larger needles. With RS facing, join yarn and join shoulders together using 3-needle bind-off.
With smaller needle and beginning at center back of neck opening, pick up and knit 132 (148, 164, 164, 180, 180, 180) sts in neck opening. PM for beginning of rnd, and begin working in the rnd.
Nxt rnd: *K1, p3; rep from * to end of rnd. Work in rib patt as established till ribbing meas .75” from pick up, BO all sts in patt.

Sleeve Decrease Set

Rnd 1: K1, k2tog, work Rnd 1 of Patt to 2 sts from end, ssk. (2 sts dec)
Rnds 2-4: K1, work in Patt to 1 st from end, k1.
Rnd 5: K2tog, work Rnd 5 of Patt to 2 sts from end, k2tog. (2 sts dec)
Rnd 6: Work Rnd 6 of Patt around.
Rnd before beginning Decrease set must be a Rnd 6, and rnd after Decrease set must be a Rnd 7 of Patt.

Sleeves

With larger DPNs and beginning in bottom center of armhole, pick up and knit 72 (80, 88, 92, 104, 108, 116) sts evenly in armhole opening. PM for beg of rnd, and begin working in the rnd.

First Four Sizes
Beginning with Rnd 2 of Patt, work 17 rnds in Patt, ending with a Rnd 6, then work Decrease set. Work Decrease set every 25th rnd 2 (2, 0, 0) times more, and every 13th rnd 5 (6, 10, 10) times, 40 (44, 48, 52) sts remain.

Last Three Sizes
Beginning with Rnd 2 of Patt, work 5 rnds, ending with a Rnd 6, then work Decrease set. Work Decrease set every 13th rnd 11 (11, 12) times more.

All Sizes
After working decreases, 40 (44, 48, 52, 56, 60, 64) sts remain. If necessary, work even in Patt till sleeve meas 15.5 (15.5, 16, 16, 16.5, 16.5, 17.5)” from beginning, ending with a Rnd 6 or 12 of Patt, then switch to smaller size needles.
Nxt rnd: *K1, p3; rep from * around. Work in rib pattern as established till ribbing meas 2”, bind off all sts in pattern.

Nxt rnd: Work as Rnd 2 of Patt worked in the rnd. Continue working in Patt over the next 17 rnds, ending with a Rnd 6 of Patt.
Nxt rnd (dec rnd): K1, k2tog, work in Patt to 2 sts from end, ssk. (86 sts)
Nxt rnd: K1, work as Rnd 2 of Patt.
Nxt rnd: K1, work as Rnd 3 of Patt.
Nxt Rnd: K1, work as Rnd 4 of Patt.
Nxt rnd (dec rnd): K2tog, work in Patt to 2 sts from end of rnd, k2tog. (84 sts)
Nxt Rnd: Work as Rnd 6 of Patt. Continue working in Patt 12 rnds more, ending with a Rnd 6. Work previous 18 rnds ( , 9, 9 11, 11, 11) times more. (48 sts rem)
If necessary, work even in Patt til sleeve meas 15 (16, 16, 16, 17, 17, 18) ” from beginning of sleeve, ending with a Rnd 6 or 12, then switch to smaller DPNs.

Finishing

Weave in all loose ends and block sweater, paying extra attention to sleeves and collar.
