Blue Mountain Pullover

This oversized pullover will make you want to curl up next to a bonfire or watch the sunrise on a chilly morning. Plus, the lace and garter front panel make it a sweater you will want to show off.

Bulky weight yarn Knit Picks Biggo (50% Superwash Merino Wool, 50% Nylon; 110 yards [100 meters]/100 grams): 25626 Sapphire Heather, 8 (8, 8, 9, 9, 10, 11) hanks.

Needles: US size 10½ (6.5 mm): 29” circular and DPNS; US 10 (6 mm): DPNS.

Pattern Notes

The body of this pullover is worked in the round from the lower edge to the underarm, then the front and back are worked separately back and forth. After the shoulders are seamed, sleeve stitches are picked up and the sleeve is worked in the round from the top down.

Divide Front and Back

Place last 62 (66, 70, 74, 78, 84, 92) sts on holder for Back, removing markers – 66 (70, 74, 78, 82, 88, 96) sts rem on needle for Front.

Beg working back and forth in rows.

Front

Work even until Armhole meas 8 (8¼, 8½, 8¾, 9¼, 9½, 10)” / [20.5 (21, 21.5, 22, 23.5, 24, 25.5) cm], ending with Row 8 of Lace stitch patt.

Shape Neck

Next Row (RS): K19 (21, 23, 24, 26, 28, 32), place these sts for on holder for Left Shoulder, BO 28 (28, 28, 30, 30, 32, 32) sts for Neck – 19 (21, 23, 24, 26, 28, 32) sts rem for Right Shoulder.

Shape shoulder using short rows:

Short-Row 1 (RS): Sl1, k14 (16, 18, 19, 20, 22, 25), wrap next st and turn.

Short-Row 2 and all even rows (WS): Purl.

Short-Row 3: Sl1, k10 (12, 14, 15, 15, 17, 19), wrap next st and turn.

Note: Neck shaping will begin before shoulder short row shaping is completed.

Short-Row 1 (RS): K19 (21, 23, 24, 26, 28, 32), pm, k24 (24, 24, 26, 26, 28, 28), pm, k to last 4 (4, 4, 4, 5, 5, 6) sts, wrap next st and turn.

Short-Row 2 (WS): P to last 4 (4, 4, 4, 5, 5, 6) sts, wrap next st and turn.

Short-Row 3: K to 4 (4, 4, 4, 5, 5, 6) sts before wrapped st, wrap next st and turn.

Short-Row 4: Rep Short-Row 2.

Shape Neck

Next row (RS): K to m, remove marker and place 19 (21, 23, 24, 26, 28, 32) sts holder for Right Shoulder, BO 24 (24, 24, 26, 26, 28, 28) sts – 19 (21, 23, 24, 26, 28, 32) sts rem on needle for Left Shoulder.

Short-Row 5 (RS): Sl1, k6 (8, 10, 11, 11, 12, 13), wrap next st and turn.

Short-Row 6 and all even rows (WS): Purl.

Short-Row 7: Sl1, k2 (4, 6, 7, 7, 7, 7), wrap next st and turn.

Short-Row 9: K to end, knitting wraps tog with wrapped sts.

Place sts on holder.

Right Shoulder

Return 19 (21, 23, 24, 26, 28, 32) held sts to needle, ready to work a WS row.

Shape shoulder using short rows:

Short-Row 1 (WS): Sl1, p6 (8, 10, 11, 11, 12, 13), wrap next st and turn.

Short-Row 2 and all even rows (RS): Knit.

Short-Row 7: Sl1, p2 (4, 6, 7, 7, 7, 7), wrap next st and turn.

Short-Row 9: P to end, purling wraps tog with wrapped sts.

With RS tog, join shoulders with 3-Needle BO.

Sleeves

With larger DPNS and RS facing, beg at center of underarm, pick up and k52 (54, 56, 58, 62, 62, 66) sts evenly spaced around armhole edge, pm and join in the rnd.

Work 4 rnds in St st.

Dec Rnd: K1, ssk, work to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1 — 2 sts dec’d; 50 (52, 54, 56, 60, 60, 64) sts.

Rep Dec Rnd every 6 (6, 6, 6, 4, 5, 4) rnds 7 (7, 7, 8, 10, 9, 10) more times – 36 (38, 40, 40, 40, 42, 44) sts rem.

Work even until piece meas 12¼ (12, 11¾, 12, 12, 11¾, 11¾)” / [31 (30.5, 30, 30.5, 30.5, 30, 30) cm] from underarm.

Switch to smaller needles.

Edging

Rnd 1: Purl.

Rnd 2: Knit.

Rnd 3: Purl.

BO loosely kwise.

Finishing

Block to measurements.

Neckband

With smaller DPNS and RS facing, starting at beg of Back BO, pick up and k64 (64, 64, 68, 68, 72, 72) sts, pm and join in the rnd.

Rnd 1: Purl.

Rnd 2: Knit.

Rnd 3: Purl.

BO loosely kwise.
