Special Stitches

Figure-Eight cast on

Step 1: In your left hand, hold one straight needle and the tip of the circular needle together, the circular needle is the bottom needle. Holding the tail yarn firmly at the front of the bottom needle with your left thumb, keeping the tail yarn to the left and the working yarn to the right, take the working yarn over the bottom needle and down between the two needles.

Step 2: Take the working yarn under and around the top needle from front to back, then take the working yarn back down between the two needles. You should have a loop of yarn on the top needle. This is your first st.

Step 3: Now, make a st on the bottom needle by bringing the working yarn under and around the bottom needle, then taking it from front to back and back down between the two needles.

Step 4: Repeat, making sts alternately on the top and bottom needles wrapping the yarn using a figure-of-eight motion.

Kitchener stitch

Step 1: Break yarn, leaving a long tail (at least 24”) and thread onto tapestry needle.

Step 2: Insert tapestry needle through first st on front needle as if to purl, leave st on needle, pull yarn through.

Step 3: Insert tapestry needle through first st on back needle as if to knit, leave st on needle, pull yarn through.

Step 4: Insert tapestry needle through first st on front needle as if to knit and slip st off needle.

Step 5: Insert tapestry needle through next st on front needle as if to purl, leave st on needle, pull yarn through.

Step 6: Insert tapestry needle through first st on back needle as if to purl and slip st off needle.

Step 7: Insert tapestry needle through next st on back needle as if to knit, leave st on needle, pull yarn through.

Repeat Steps 3-6 until 1 st remains on each needle.

Step 8: Insert tapestry needle through first st on front needle as if to knit and slip st off needle.

Step 9: Insert tapestry needle through first st on back needle as if to purl and slip st off needle.

Use the tip of the tapestry needle to even out tension across the grafted sts.

Pattern Notes

This pattern is worked flat beginning with a figure-eight cast on. The ends are then grafted together to create an infinity scarf. The chart shows RS only.

Using figure-eight cast on, CO 45 sts onto each needle. Pull the circular needle through so 45 loops are held on the cable between the two tips. You will now have 45 sts on the straight needle and 45 sts left on hold on the circular needle. Leaving the circular needle where it is, work on these 45 sts.
