Tiny Dancer Vest

This vest has a contrast color at each rib and features a stitch pattern that creates a ‘nubby’ pinstripe giving a simple but interesting texture. Vests are great for layering in the fall and will also add style to any child’s wardrobe.

Gauge: 22 sts and 30 rows = 4” [10 cm] in St st after wet blocking.

Materials

Yarn:

Light Weight Yarn Drops Karisma (100% Wool; 109 yards [100 meters]/50 grams): 60 Blue Turquoise (MC), 2 (3, 3) balls; 52 Dark Mustard (CC), 1 (1, 1) ball

Needles: US size 5 (3.75 mm): straight and 16” circular; US size 6 (4mm) straight and 16” circular; US size 5 (3.75mm) set of DPNs

Notions: Stitch holders; stitch marker; tapestry needle

Pattern Notes

This pattern is worked in the round from the bottom up to the armholes and worked flat for the upper body.

Stitch pattern in the round

Rnd 1 (WS): Purl.
Rnd 2 (RS): *P1, k1tbl, p1; rep from * to end of rnd.

Note: When working the pattern flat for the upper body, the WS rows will be knit instead of purl.

Body

With smaller circular needle and MC, CO 120 (138, 150) sts and join to work in the rnd, being careful not to twist sts.

Work 8 rnds in k3, p3 rib.

Change to CC, work 2 rnds in rib.

Change back to MC, work 1 more rnd in rib.

Change to larger needles, work stitch pattern until piece measures 6¼ (7, 8)” from CO.

Armhole Shaping (back and front will now be worked flat)

Place 60 (69, 75) sts for Back onto holder or spare yarn.

Front

With RS facing, BO 3 (4, 4) sts at beg of next 2 rows and 3 sts at beg of foll 2 rows – 48 (55, 61) sts.

Next Row (RS): Dec 1 st at each end of row and following 2 (2, 3) RS rows – 42 (49, 53) sts.

Cont in patt until armhole measures 1½ (1¾, 2¼)”.

Shape Neck

Next Row (RS): K13 (14, 15) sts, turn, placing rem sts on holder or spare yarn.

Dec 1 st at neck edge on next 4 rows – 9 (10, 11) sts.

Work straight until armhole measures 4¾ (5½, 5¾)”.

Bind off.

With RS facing, slip 16 (21, 23) sts for front neck onto holder.

Rejoin yarn to rem 13 (14, 15) sts, work in patt to end of row.

Dec 1 st at neck edge on next 4 rows – 9 (10, 11) sts.

Work straight until armhole measures 4¾ (5½, 5¾)”.

Bind off.

Back

Place 60 (69, 75) sts on to needle and rejoin yarn.

With RS facing, BO 3 (4, 4) sts at beg of next 2 rows and 3 sts at beg of foll 2 rows – 48 (55, 61) sts.

Next Row (RS): Dec 1 st at each end of row and following 2 (2, 3) RS rows – 42 (49, 53) sts.

Cont in patt until armhole measures 3 (3½, 3¾)”.

Shape neck

With RS facing, k13 (14, 15) sts, turn, placing rem sts on holder or spare yarn.

Dec 1 st at neck edge on next 4 rows – 9 (10, 11) sts.

Work straight until armhole measures 4¾ (5½, 5¾)”.

Bind off.

With RS facing, slip 16 (21, 23) sts back neck.

Rejoin yarn to rem 13 (14, 15) sts, k to end of row.

Dec 1 st at neck edge on next 4 rows – 9 (10, 11) sts.

Work until armhole measures 4¾ (5½, 5¾)”.

Bind off.

Seam both shoulders

Neck Edging

With smaller circular needle and MC, pick up and knit 11 (13, 14) sts down left front, 16 (21, 23) sts from front holder, 11 (13, 14) sts up right front, 4 (6, 7) sts down right back, 16 (21, 23) sts back neck holder and 4 (6, 7) sts up left back neck. Place marker and join to work in the rnd – 62 (80, 88) sts on needle.

Work 1 rnd in k2, p2 rib.

Next Rnd: Change to CC, work 2 rnds in k2, p2 rib.
Next Rnd: Change to MC, work 3 rnds in k2, p2 rib.

Bind off.

Armhole Edging (both worked same)

Using DPNs and MC, pick up and knit 64 (68, 72) sts around armhole, place marker and join to work in the rnd.

Work 1 rnd in k2, p2 rib.

Next Rnd: Change to CC, work 2 rnds in k2, p2 rib.
Next Rnd: Change to MC, work 3 rnds in k2, p2 rib.

Bind off.

Finishing

Weave in all ends and block to measurements.yarn ball
